Herbs for Emotional Healing: How to Connect to Your Heart Center
I know you might be asking yourself: What herb could possibly help me connect to my heart center? What do I even mean by "heart center"? And what are some practical ways I can actually tune into it?
First, let’s talk about the incredible power of our plant allies. Herbs have a unique way of healing not only our physical bodies but our spiritual and energetic bodies as well. Leaning on plant medicine for support can work wonders, especially when we need it the most. There are a couple of specific herbs I lean on heavily when I need to reconnect with my heart space. In a world full of pain and anxiety, these plants remind me that Mother Nature is always here to support our well-being.
What is the Heart Center?
So, what do I mean when I say "heart center"?
It’s that space that holds the heavy weight when you feel unwanted or unloved, and it's the exact same space that expands when you feel loved, wanted, and needed. It’s that physical and energetic space where you instinctively place your hand over your chest, close your eyes, and take a deep inhale and exhale to gain clarity or take a pause when life gets crazy.
We may not be able to see our heart center, but we can absolutely feel it. At times, we forget to give grace to our heart space when things go wrong or when we feel ashamed. We allow pain, suffering, lies, and heartache to harden this area. My friend, this only brings on more anxiety and emotional pain, which can eventually manifest as physical dis-ease.
Let’s get down to the herbs I lean on to help me soften, center, and protect this sacred space.
One of my my favorite plant allies is Motherwort. Motherwort: The "Lion-Hearted" Hug
This is one of my all-time favorite herbs to help bridge the gap when I’m feeling unloved or when my heart physically aches from stress. This herb brings a "Mom, can we talk?" kind of comforting energy.
Motherwort’s Latin name is Leonurus cardiaca, which translates to "lion heart." It earned this name because of its profound medicinal properties that fortify the heart area. Physically, it acts as a nervine that can help calm a racing, anxious heart. Energetically, it acts like a fierce, protective mother—providing grounding comfort while giving you the courage of a lion to face your emotions. When your heart feels scattered or vulnerable, Motherwort pulls you back into your center.
3 Practical Ways to Connect to Your Heart Space
By now you’re asking yourself, "Okay, well this is great Lucy, but how do I actually use these herbs to connect?" I’m so glad you asked. Here are my top three rituals:
Take an Herbal Bath
Herbal baths are incredible self-care rituals that pull you right back to yourself. You can brew a strong tea of motherwort and pour it directly into your bathwater. Be sure to let it steep for about 20 minutes. In this ritual, you are taking care of yourself in the present moment. You’re connecting solely with how you feel, and the warm water and plant magic help wash away the heavy energy. Nothing else matters in that moment.
Start Journaling Without Shame
Journaling allows me to pour out my feelings without judgment. I give myself permission to be completely free in that moment. While I write, I might sip on a heart-supporting tea, allowing the herbs to work internally while I process my emotions on paper. It is in these moments of writing that I find grace and forgiveness for myself.
Practice Heart-Opening Yoga
The physical body holds onto emotional tension, especially in the chest and shoulders. The last thing I like to do is yoga to physically open that space back up. One of the best poses for connecting to the heart chakra is the Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana). This pose aids in opening the heart by aligning the body with spirit. Breathe deeply and imagine a green color radiating throughout your body.
I hope this information has helped you understand how herbs can become our biggest allies in times of need.
